The Eight Laws of Health
- Nutrition: Lower your salt, refined fats, sugar and cholesterol intake. (Cholesterol is found in all animal products). Eating a simple diet of fruits, nuts, vegetables and legumes (beans) will go a long way in controlling high blood pressure. As a side benefit, a simple diet is a vital part of the solution to any weight problem.
- Exercise: A regular exercise program will help in lowering blood pressure and the risk of other degenerative diseases by increasing the efficiency of the heart and circulatory system. Exercise is a terrific way to control high levels of stress.
- Water: A daily intake of 6-8 glasses (8 oz./glass) of water per day is adequate to help keep blood pure and thin. "Thick" blood makes the heart work harder.
- Sunshine: Current research reveals that moderate exposure to sunlight causes our bodies to produce a substance that dilates our blood vessels (makes them wider in diameter) thus making the heart's job much easier. This effect can lower the blood pressure for up to 5 days. A cloudy sky does not render sunshine ineffective; 70% of the sun's rays still penetrate the cloudy layer.
- Temperance: For every 5 pounds of fat, our heart has 3 extra miles of blood vessels to pump through, so eat to live, don't live to eat. Smoking, alcohol, and drugs also create situations in which the heart has to work harder. Nicotine causes the vessels to constrict, alcohol causes the red blood cells to stick together, and drugs destroy brain function. Intemperance in daily lifestyle is the largest single contributor to most degenerative diseases. REFRAIN!
- Air: A deep breath of fresh air can soothe the nerves and lower blood pressure through helping us relax.
- Rest/Relaxation: These two principles are essential in effective hypertension treatment, and to a healthy lifestyle in general. Our bodies need the break from the stresses of life in order to rebuild themselves.
- Trust in God: Yes! God does care about you. Quality time with Him can make all the difference in the world.
